Conscientious and cute: Stray Dog Designs

Today I'm going to restrict myself a bit when it comes to number of photos in one blog post! I've found a great website that's called Stray Dog Designs. They've got stuff that's eco friendly/recycled/fairtrade/made without child labour - plus for every item sold, a portion of the purchase price goes to charity for children or animals! And the items they sell are really whimsical and super cute - something for the princess within us all...

The Deco Detective snooped around and found us!  Read all about it at:  http://thedecodetective.blogspot.com/2008/10/conscientious-and-cute-stray-dog.html

Artful Giving Leads to Good Karma

Artful Giving

I was sorting through my emails today, and came across an interesting press release from Stray Dog Designs that I want to share with you. Let me start by saying, this company rocks! Not only are their lamps, furniture and other home décor accessories beautiful, they are also handcrafted using materials that are completely recyclable or sustainable. Jane Gray, designer and co-founder (with her husband, no less!) strongly believes that environmentally responsible materials should be used whenever possible and that artisans should be paid a fair living wage. This alone makes them awesome, but Jane is taking it to the next level.

Look at some of her gorgeous designs:

ophelia lamp

Ophelia Lamp—A branchy base, striped shade, and flower finial make this lamp cute and kind of fancy. Tole. Handmade and hand painted by artisans in Mexico.

peacock

Peacock—A truly magnificent bird. Handmade of papier mache from recycled materials by artisans in Haiti.

weed cube stool/accent table

Weed Cube Stool/Accent Table—Wraparound weeds adorn a versatile cube. Handmade of papier mache from recycled materials by artisans in Haiti.

Now here’s the really exciting news: Effective immediately, SSD will donate a portion of the purchase price of EVERY product to local charities in the communities where their products are made. This includes feeding and housing the homeless, and medical care for animals. The new giving program, aptly called Stray Giving—!Vaya con Perros! (Go with Dogs!) stemmed from holiday overload that Jane experienced in 2007. Not only did it look like Santa’s elves took over every store (immediately after Halloween. Do I really have to look at this stuff for two months?), but she noticed that her children received a ridiculous amount of gifts—most unappreciated and only played with a few times. So she encouraged her family to buy each other less gifts (but perhaps more thoughtful), and use the money they saved to give to those in need. To her surprise, everyone loved the idea and from that, Jane realized that she could give back even more using her company as the vehicle. Basically, you get the best of both—beautiful items to add to your registry and good karma.

Go to straydogdesigns.com to check out these wares and to learn more about Stray Giving. Cheers!

Stray Dog Designs featured in Associated Press article

July 1, 2008

Kim Cook ,of the Associated Press, recently interviewed Stray Dog Designs designer Jane Gray.

Of course, being the AP, there was a good deal of editing involved, but by the end of June our Artichoke Lamp and a couple of Jane's comments popped up in newspapers all over the US and Canada.

In case you missed it, here's what Jane said:

"Our clients have a sense of humor and a desire to put a little fun into their surroundings."

"Adding a lamp or two with loads of personality is a great way to punch up your interior without spending too much money."

So true!

Residential Lighting profiles Jane and papier mache

February 19, 2008
Stray Dog Designs' Papier-Mache Collection

Jane Grey
Jane Grey, with daughter Stella
Made in Haiti from recycled materials and adorned with eco-friendly paints, Stray Dog Designs’ Papier-Mâché Collection represents several new directions for designer and founder Jane Grey.

Grey: As a medium, papier-mâché was a big departure for us. It’s the same thing you made in elementary school with newspaper and Elmer’s Glue or flour and water. You just put so many layers on, and it dries really hard. You don’t see it around much anymore, but every once in a while you’ll run into antique papier-mâché.

Stray Dog Designs’ papier-mâché Artichoke lamp in Bahamian Sea Blue.
We started out with lighting, which has consistently been the strongest component of our company, and now we also have a few accessories and mirrors and tables. Our papier-mâché looks very different from our tin [offerings]. It’s much more organic looking. All of our stuff is handmade, but you can really tell this is; sometimes you can even see the texture of the newspaper and boxes used to make it. At first I thought that was going to bother me, but the more I looked at it, the more I liked it.

The place where our papier-mâché is made is also a big change for us. Our glass, tin and iron pieces are made by artisans in Mexico, where half the population lives in poverty. Papier-mâché can be done anywhere in the world, of course, but we chose Haiti because the country is having such a hard struggle; almost 80 percent are unemployed. We figured that anyone, even [those] without an infrastructure, can do papier-mâché.

We initially did the [line] in white, which is unlike us because we’re all about color. But the artisans in Haiti were new to working with us, and the designs we were giving them were so different from anything they had been doing, I thought it would be best to keep the job as simple as possible. Also, because it is such a poor country, it is really hard for them to get paint that would match our Benjamin Moore colors. We [recently] decided to paint things ourselves here in the States using water-based, low-VOC [volatile organic compounds] paints. Considering the large amount of products coming from overseas that contain high levels of toxic chemicals, we are ecstatic to have found paint that is safe for the environ-ment, our customers and our employees. At the Atlanta Market in January, we introduced 12 new colors. People loved the white, but we are really best known for our bright colors.

A Very Friendly Dog

January 18, 2008
Chattanooga, TN -- Stray Dog Designs announces the addition of 12 environmentally friendly colors to its Papier Mache Collection of lamps and home accessories.  Stray Dog’s papier mache products -- made primarily from recycled cement bags by artisans in sustainable jobs -- are already plenty environmentally friendly. But now they’re colored exclusively via a line of water based, low VOC (volatile organic compounds) Aura paints from Benjamin Moore. And the colors are gorgeous!

VOC’s emit smog-forming chemicals -- a major contributor to ground-level ozone pollution.  Lower VOC paints preserve both indoor and outdoor air quality and reduce eye and respiratory irritation from exposure to VOC fumes.  And since low VOC paints are water based, they don’t use petroleum products, which also harm the environment.

Since 2006 Stray Dog Designs’ Papier Mache Collection has featured a growing line of captivating lamps and chic accessories in delightful, organic shapes -- all in elegant, gleaming white.

But this year designer Jane Gray employs her inspired color sense with gusto to stunning effect.  Keeping the ever popular white, she ups the ante by drenching her papier mache designs in 12 sumptuous new colors -- like African Violet, Pumpkin Blush, and Douglas Fir -- a whole spectrum of vibrant, radiant, and in some cases, downright zesty shades.

And since they’re all water-based, low-VOC paints, no matter what color you choose – it’s still green!

Stray Dog Designs founder Billy Pritchard can’t stop grinning about the new colors, saying, “This is only the latest addition to our already environmentally conscious product line.  We’re pretty proud of that!”

Stray Dog Designs is a designer/manufacturer of unique lamps and home accessories made from glass, tin, iron, and papier mache. Each piece is a handmade, original work of art made by artisans in Mexico, where half the population lives in poverty, and in Haiti, where almost 80% are unemployed. With the addition of low-VOC paints Stray Dog Designs continues to:

1)      Support sustainable jobs throughout the world by creating employment where it’s needed the most;

2)      Seek out artisans who have history and skill in the mediums we choose so that they can work in their own area of expertise, keeping their rich traditions alive;

3)      Make sure our artisans earn a fair, living wage to support their families;

4)      Use recycled and recyclable materials whenever possible, and;

5)      Donate to organizations that work toward making all of our lives better

“Considering the large amount of products coming from overseas that have been found to contain dangerously high levels of toxic chemicals, we are ecstatic that we found paint for our Papier Mache Collection that is safe for the environment, our customers, and our employees,”  said Pritchard.

Still Green After All These Years

July 18, 2007

This summer we are proud to be included in two special green showrooms in addition to our regular showroom spaces.

From Wednesday, July 11th through Monday, July 16th in “The AmericasMart Green Product Showcase” in Atlanta, three of our papier mache products will be on display along with our Little Mikey Glass Lamp--the Sarah Lamp, the Fish Stool/Accent Table, and our Birds--in Building 2, Space 1201 from 9am – 6pm daily.

The following month, our papier mache Aloe Stool/Accent Table and our Birds will be included in “SustainAbility:  Design for a Better World,” debuting at New York City’s Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, August 11th – 16th.

We are delighted to note that what has been a major part of our mission for the 12 years of our existence is now a new and important trend.  Since our inception we have been committed to using recycled materials whenever possible, and to paying the artisans who make our products a living wage.  We have made a point of seeking out countries with the greatest need, and we make an effort to choose mediums that reflect the artisans’ rich history and expertise.

Our papier mache products are handmade from recycled cement bags by artisans in Haiti, and the glass in our lamps is mouth blown from recycled bottles by artisans in Mexico.  Both countries have a long, rich history in these mediums, and all artisans are paid a living wage.

We will continue to search for ways to make our products more environmentally friendly, and to seek new paths to social responsibility.
