Stray Dog Designs Haitian Worker Relief Fund

January 18, 2010

Stray Dog Designs Haitian Worker Relief Fund

We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to our many friends, customers, and colleagues who have called and written expressing concern about Haiti and the people with whom Stray Dog Designs works there. Those of you who have admired and purchased products created by the folks we work with there, have a connection. As you know, we went to Haiti five years ago for the purpose of bringing work to that impoverished nation. There is no better relief from poverty than a chance for gainful employment at a meaningful wage, both of which we were happy to be able to provide.

In the wake of the recent tragic earthquake we, like the rest of the world, await more information and news of our workers and friends in Haiti. We know that there is a high probability that the building where our artisans worked was damaged, thereby taking their place of work away. We pray that was the worst of it, but we don't yet know with so much post earthquake chaos at this time.

At first we planned to make a donation to  an organization like Doctors Without Borders, but decided instead to create a direct relief fund for the very workers with whom we work. Noted designer Kathy Bazemore illustrated our feeling perfectly when she wrote:

Dear Billy & Jane,
I am so sorry about what is happening in Haiti. Any word from your friends there?  During Katrina's aftermath, getting a donation right into the life of friends of friends was quicker relief than sending a donation through an organization. So let me know if there is any way that I can help - or if there is a specific effort or organization you think would be most beneficial to families you know I would like to know how to help.

We have set up the Stray Dog Designs Haitian Worker Relief Fund. The money we collect will be used to directly help our workers and friends of Stray Dog Designs in Haiti to rebuild their lives, whatever that means -donating blankets or clothing, acquiring medical assistance, rebuilding homes, or help relocating to another area.

Whatever the need, we wish to continue to help the very people we went to help in the first place. In addition,
Stray Dog Designs will match $.50 on every dollar raised up to $10,000.00.

Obviously there are immediate needs for everyone in Haiti, and should you feel moved to give to other helping organizations we urge you to do so. Our goal at Stray Dog Designs will be to address the needs of the few hundred people and their families with whom we have a connection.

If you wish to join our effort we extend our deepest gratitude. Those who donate to our Fund will receive detailed information as to how their money is used.

Donations can be made by sending a check made out to “Stray Dog Designs Haitian Worker Relief Fund” to:

Thank  you!

Our new, extremely cute, mushrooms graced stores and display windows for J Crew stores in August.

Seattle's Revival Home & Garden blogs the dog

August 13, 2009

We could not be more excited to be partnering with Tottini, one of our favorite local retailers for small ones, to design and give away a fantastic and virtually complete nursery....all it needs is a little one to call it (cry it?) home.

Tottini provided the gorgeous (and solidly built, I might add, after sliding them around the store) crib and changing table from swoon-inducing interior designer David Netto's Netto Collection. We provided the concept and decorative accessories, including some fantastic pieces from a new line we're carrying, Stray Dog Designs.

Most of their pieces are crafted from some combination of tole and papier-mache, and all are finished with low-VOC paint in shades from Benjamin Moore. They're an interesting company that lives by their values, and it doesn't hurt that their items are, as we say in the South, cute as all get out.

Here's a peek at our inspiration board for the design:

Whimsy

There is so much to be said about Stray Dog Designs. Their product is so distinctive and eye catching. But, their company's mission is just as inspiring as their art.
Stray Dog employs artisans from around the globe, paying them a livable wage. These artisans are given the opportunity to hone their craft all while providing for their families.

daring and different and so much fun!

A portion of each sale is set aside to be donated to charity. Each year, Stray Dog Designs donates money to three specific charities. The Children's Nutritional Program of Haiti, Casita Linda, Sociedad Proctectora de Animales.

Aren't these fabulous? And what is even better is that from your purchase they are helping to raise a generation of healthy children in the impoverished country of Haiti. Families living in shacks in Mexico are given decent, livable homes with running water. And, hundreds of stray animals are given proper vet care as well as being spayed and neutered.

Starfish Wastebasket

Stray Dog has been given some great press over the years. You may have seen this little number in Domino, February 2008. Ohh, Domino, how we miss you!

Faux Bois Mirror in white (the turquoise is really cool as well)

Place two of these twin headboards in a guest room with some fluffy white bedding and perhaps a funky bolster.

A beautiful product with a beautiful cause!

Papier Mache -- "heirlooms" from artisans who know how

Giving Paper a New Life: Papier-Mâché Stools by Stray Dog Designs

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed or email newsletter so you don't miss any great green finds! And don't miss your chance to win a fabulous organic cotton throw pillow by Fabricadabra!

furn-straydogstoolsWhile I consider myself to be an aspiring eco crafter, I have never done papier-mâché. As much as I love the idea of turning old newspapers into something beautiful that I can use every day, I’ve always been little intimidated by the process. It’s just hard to imagine strips of paper and gobs of paste becoming anything else. I’m afraid I’ll end up with something that I’ll end up hiding away in a box in storage because it’s so ugly and misshapen. Thankfully, there are artisans who have mastered papier-mâché technique, and I’d be more than happy to have some of their work in my home. These stools and accent tables by Stray Dog Designs are, in my opinion, papier-mâché at its absolute finest.

I love the fact that although the stools are painted a pristine white, the raised images and patterns give them extra dimension and appeal. They are also available in a wide array of beautiful-sounding colors like African Violet, Chocolate Candy Brown, Pumpkin Blush and Vienna Green. I don’t know this for sure, but papier-mâché doesn’t seem like a technique that would be easily mass produced. Even if it is, these particular pieces, like most of Stray Dog’s other products, are handmade by talented Haitian artisans. That would certainly explain the premium price. These are also the types of pieces that can easily become family heirlooms passed down from generation to generation, and I think that’s worth a couple hundred dollars.

These are exactly the type of pieces I would want to use as bedside tables if I had space for them. They are unique and completely unexpected — two of the adjectives that describe the way I like to envision my home.

Why It’s Green:

  • Made of recycled cement bags
  • Finished with water-based, low-VOC paints
  • Handmade by Haitian artisans

Stray Dog Designs Brightened My Day

I came across Stray Dog Designs by accident.  I was playing around with Google images (as I often do to find inspiration) and stumbled upon a fantastic floor lamp.  When I clicked on the link, I was lead to Stray Dog Designs.  It was one of those "How come I've never seen this before!?" moments.

They have a wonderful selection of lighting, accessories and odds-and-ends that are incredibly charming.  I had to stop myself from ordering everything on the site!  My personal favorites are the hanging chandeliers.  They are so creative and whimsical, I can't imagine any little girl growing up without one.

In addition to lighting, they have a few pieces of furniture in fun colors and shapes, as well as picture frames, ornaments and organizers.

Artful Giving Leads to Good Karma

July 22, 2008

July 22, 2008

Artful Giving

I was sorting through my emails today, and came across an interesting press release from Stray Dog Designs that I want to share with you. Let me start by saying, this company rocks! Not only are their lamps, furniture and other home décor accessories beautiful, they are also handcrafted using materials that are completely recyclable or sustainable. Jane Gray, designer and co-founder (with her husband, no less!) strongly believes that environmentally responsible materials should be used whenever possible and that artisans should be paid a fair living wage. This alone makes them awesome, but Jane is taking it to the next level.

Look at some of her gorgeous designs:

ophelia lamp

Ophelia Lamp—A branchy base, striped shade, and flower finial make this lamp cute and kind of fancy. Tole. Handmade and hand painted by artisans in Mexico.

peacock

Peacock—A truly magnificent bird. Handmade of papier mache from recycled materials by artisans in Haiti.

weed cube stool/accent table

Weed Cube Stool/Accent Table—Wraparound weeds adorn a versatile cube. Handmade of papier mache from recycled materials by artisans in Haiti.

Now here’s the really exciting news: Effective immediately, SSD will donate a portion of the purchase price of EVERY product to local charities in the communities where their products are made. This includes feeding and housing the homeless, and medical care for animals. The new giving program, aptly called Stray Giving—!Vaya con Perros! (Go with Dogs!) stemmed from holiday overload that Jane experienced in 2007. Not only did it look like Santa’s elves took over every store (immediately after Halloween. Do I really have to look at this stuff for two months?), but she noticed that her children received a ridiculous amount of gifts—most unappreciated and only played with a few times. So she encouraged her family to buy each other less gifts (but perhaps more thoughtful), and use the money they saved to give to those in need. To her surprise, everyone loved the idea and from that, Jane realized that she could give back even more using her company as the vehicle. Basically, you get the best of both—beautiful items to add to your registry and good karma.

Go to straydogdesigns.com to check out these wares and to learn more about Stray Giving. Cheers!

Residential Lighting profiles Jane and papier mache

February 19, 2008
Stray Dog Designs' Papier-Mache Collection

Jane Grey
Jane Grey, with daughter Stella
Made in Haiti from recycled materials and adorned with eco-friendly paints, Stray Dog Designs’ Papier-Mâché Collection represents several new directions for designer and founder Jane Grey.

Grey: As a medium, papier-mâché was a big departure for us. It’s the same thing you made in elementary school with newspaper and Elmer’s Glue or flour and water. You just put so many layers on, and it dries really hard. You don’t see it around much anymore, but every once in a while you’ll run into antique papier-mâché.

Stray Dog Designs’ papier-mâché Artichoke lamp in Bahamian Sea Blue.
We started out with lighting, which has consistently been the strongest component of our company, and now we also have a few accessories and mirrors and tables. Our papier-mâché looks very different from our tin [offerings]. It’s much more organic looking. All of our stuff is handmade, but you can really tell this is; sometimes you can even see the texture of the newspaper and boxes used to make it. At first I thought that was going to bother me, but the more I looked at it, the more I liked it.

The place where our papier-mâché is made is also a big change for us. Our glass, tin and iron pieces are made by artisans in Mexico, where half the population lives in poverty. Papier-mâché can be done anywhere in the world, of course, but we chose Haiti because the country is having such a hard struggle; almost 80 percent are unemployed. We figured that anyone, even [those] without an infrastructure, can do papier-mâché.

We initially did the [line] in white, which is unlike us because we’re all about color. But the artisans in Haiti were new to working with us, and the designs we were giving them were so different from anything they had been doing, I thought it would be best to keep the job as simple as possible. Also, because it is such a poor country, it is really hard for them to get paint that would match our Benjamin Moore colors. We [recently] decided to paint things ourselves here in the States using water-based, low-VOC [volatile organic compounds] paints. Considering the large amount of products coming from overseas that contain high levels of toxic chemicals, we are ecstatic to have found paint that is safe for the environ-ment, our customers and our employees. At the Atlanta Market in January, we introduced 12 new colors. People loved the white, but we are really best known for our bright colors.

A Very Friendly Dog

January 18, 2008
Chattanooga, TN -- Stray Dog Designs announces the addition of 12 environmentally friendly colors to its Papier Mache Collection of lamps and home accessories.  Stray Dog’s papier mache products -- made primarily from recycled cement bags by artisans in sustainable jobs -- are already plenty environmentally friendly. But now they’re colored exclusively via a line of water based, low VOC (volatile organic compounds) Aura paints from Benjamin Moore. And the colors are gorgeous!

VOC’s emit smog-forming chemicals -- a major contributor to ground-level ozone pollution.  Lower VOC paints preserve both indoor and outdoor air quality and reduce eye and respiratory irritation from exposure to VOC fumes.  And since low VOC paints are water based, they don’t use petroleum products, which also harm the environment.

Since 2006 Stray Dog Designs’ Papier Mache Collection has featured a growing line of captivating lamps and chic accessories in delightful, organic shapes -- all in elegant, gleaming white.

But this year designer Jane Gray employs her inspired color sense with gusto to stunning effect.  Keeping the ever popular white, she ups the ante by drenching her papier mache designs in 12 sumptuous new colors -- like African Violet, Pumpkin Blush, and Douglas Fir -- a whole spectrum of vibrant, radiant, and in some cases, downright zesty shades.

And since they’re all water-based, low-VOC paints, no matter what color you choose – it’s still green!

Stray Dog Designs founder Billy Pritchard can’t stop grinning about the new colors, saying, “This is only the latest addition to our already environmentally conscious product line.  We’re pretty proud of that!”

Stray Dog Designs is a designer/manufacturer of unique lamps and home accessories made from glass, tin, iron, and papier mache. Each piece is a handmade, original work of art made by artisans in Mexico, where half the population lives in poverty, and in Haiti, where almost 80% are unemployed. With the addition of low-VOC paints Stray Dog Designs continues to:

1)      Support sustainable jobs throughout the world by creating employment where it’s needed the most;

2)      Seek out artisans who have history and skill in the mediums we choose so that they can work in their own area of expertise, keeping their rich traditions alive;

3)      Make sure our artisans earn a fair, living wage to support their families;
